Aang the movie
The Last Airbender has started test screenings, and the reviews are pouring in. Find out what the people are saying about "M. Night Shyamalan's Star Warz".
The Last Airbender is based on the Nickelodeon cartoon, but the film will be all live-action. The film centers around Aang: A boy with special powers who has to save his world, which is caught in the middle of a war with the Fire Nation. The nations of this world are all based on the elements. Plus, some of the people from these lands can control the elements. Aang can bend air, and is the very last Airbender on the planet. But there are also Waterbenders, and so on. And to top it all off, everyone kicks ass at martial arts. We've been to the set and seen the amazing world M. Night created, but that's all we can say for now.
Ain't It Cool News, however just got two reviews in from the very first screening of Airbender, and the reviews were incredibly mixed.
First Review:
- The score is finished, and fantastic! yay!
The music sounded like a great James Newton Howard original, unlike other test screenings I've seen where it's all music from previous movies.
- The narrator in the intro makes it very clear that the film will be a trilogy.
- The reviewer is impressed with newcomer Noah Ringer in the role of Aang. He's had zero formal acting training until this point, but is a little dynamo when it comes to martial arts. Which is terribly important, since Aang is the heart and soul of this film for he is the last airbender, and he can restore the peace. But this reviewer isn't familiar with the source material at all — but still, a good child lead is hard to come by.
Aang is played by Noah Ringer who absolutely looks great in this role. For a kid carrying the film as the titular character, he does a great job for the most part. I'm convinced that with a few roughly edited and performed scenes fixed by the time it's released, he'll prove he's worth his salt. It looks like this is his first movie too, so I'm even more impressed.
- Shaun Toub, playing the role of Uncle Iroh, is, from my opinion, the best part of the film. Dev Patel from, Slumdog Millionaire, is great as well as the role of Zuko the angry fire lord. But apparently Jackson Rathbone's Sokka is unbearable. We're taking this with a grain of salt as Soka and his sister Katara are the comic relief in this series. So maybe they just weren't ready for that type of martial-arts humor.

Aang the movie
Season three of Avatar: the Last Air Bender turned heads with its anodyne natured episodes the show displayed at the outset. Day of the Black Sun brought back the emergency that the show had when season two ended. However, it now had less time to introduce Aang to fire bending and finish developing the characters. The six episodes succeed not only in accomplishing those goals, but also in providing some of the best episodes in the shows run.
A Prince’s Show
The first episode, “The Western Air Temple”, starts off with Zuko pursuing Aang’s group in order to help Aang stop the Fire Lord. Unfortunately, Zuko’s hired assassin still has plans to destroy Aang. The assassin always intensifies the action, and his last bout did not disappoint. Zuko got the expected reactions when he tried to persuade the group that he had changed. It was a very bitter sweet moment to see the characters attack Zuko. After all he’s done to them in the past, the characters rage felt justified. However, after Zuko’s sincere words it’s very easy to feel sad for him despite his past. While his induction into the group is satisfying, Katara's words at the end felt validated.
Zuko’s presence in the show is really outstanding. The character feels like he’s the missing piece in the group. The tribulations Zuko faced connect with the other characters problems and fuel the development of each character. In “The Fire Bending Masters” it’s apparent that Aang is reluctant to learn how to fire bend due to his past mistakes. However, Zuko’s reluctance to continue fire bending with anger give both characters their congeniality that fuels their relationship as they search for a new way to fire bend. “The Fire Bending Masters” was fettered from a fight sequence, but the unique perspective it crafted on fire bending was interesting.
Tying Loose Ends
The "Boiling Rock Parts 1 & 2" finds Zuko and Sokka going to a fire nation prison to bust out Sokka's dad and girlfriend Suki. It's always nice to see Sokka be more than just comedic relief for the group, and he was granted a very strong story arc. This episode marks the first time we've seen Zuko hold his own against Azula. It was gratifying to see him not only develop mentally, but physically as well. Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal of Azula will undoubtedly have an effect on her later on in the series.
The most emotionally powerful of all the episodes belongs to "The Southern Raiders" What made the episode so great was how Zuko's adamant assault to help Katara is him obviously feeling remorse for his own mother's fate. The episode does an amazing job of bringing out Katara's character, and it's the strongest issue the writers have done. This is also the first time the characters have had to contemplate death. The writers have done a good job conveying the fact that they're all still children, and their uneasiness with the situation is tangible. There's a very strong lasting effect when Aang fails to answer what he will do to Lord Ozai when the time comes.

The Avatar Last Airbender movie has been announced since January 8th, 2007 whereby the trilogy of live action films would be based on the series. The film was also in dispute with James Cameron and his film Avatar regarding name ownership. As a result the movie was titled “The Last Airbender”.
Will the Avatar Last Airbender movie be the movie Shymalan envisioned it to be while watching it with his family? Will Avatar fans be disappointed at the first rendering of the Avatar last Airbender movie trilogy? These are the two underlying questions that have yet to be answered. If you scour the internet the speculation is mounting, from racism, to title ownership to who should be cast. All will be a little clearer for you on July 2, 2010. What’s important to note now about the Avatar Last Airbender movie is that fans all over the country will be flocking to the theatres in anticipation for this film. Shymalan inspired by his creative instinct recognized that the series should be put on the large screen, well isn’t that what an Avatar is all about creativity, or is that up for debate as well.
